Last week, our CEO students had the opportunity to visit Mueller Company and learn about its incredible history, which began right here in Decatur, Illinois!

It was fascinating to hear how this local company quickly grew into an international business in the early 1900s. We also toured the Mueller Museum, a hidden gem of history right here in Decatur!

One of the most interesting things we learned was how hollowed-out logs were once used as water pipes! We also explored the many inventions of Hieronymus Mueller and learned how modern versions of his innovations are still used in public works today.

What I loved most about his story was that his entrepreneurial journey began by recognizing problems, being resourceful, and finding solutions. He saw needs and figured out ways to meet them. That is entrepreneurship at its core! His curiosity, ingenuity, and willingness to solve problems created a legacy that continues to impact communities today.

We also heard from Kim Lilpop, Director of Customer Relations, who shared valuable insight into what she looks for when hiring employees, how to be a great teammate, and what it takes to set yourself apart.

Her advice reinforced so many of the principles we work to instill in our CEO students every day: Show up early. Take initiative. Look for what needs to be done without being asked. Be dependable. Be the kind of teammate you would want to work alongside.

From Hieronymus Mueller’s innovative spirit to Kim’s advice on workplace success, this visit was a great reminder that success starts with seeing opportunities, taking initiative, and being willing to do the work.

Thank you to Kim and everyone at Mueller Company for sharing your time, your history, and such valuable lessons with our students! We are fortunate to have businesses with such rich histories and global impact right here in our community.
